In pics: Rio Olympian wins men's senior race at the national cross country championships

Shona Heaslip defended her title in the women’s senior race.

RIO OLYMPIAN PAUL Pollock has captured the 2017 senior men’s title at the national cross-country championships, while Kerry native Shona Heaslip defended her crown in the women’s senior race at Abbotstown on Sunday.

The ‘Fast Running’ website reports that Pollock of the Annadale Striders club was part of a leading group from the start of the 10km race, before edging into the lead on the third of five laps.

He eventually claimed the victory in a time of 31.43, with Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock AC) taking second place (31.50), and Ballina AC’s Hugh Armstrong finishing in third (31.50).

Heasplip, who runs with An Riocht AC, retained her senior women’s title in a finishing time of 28.31. Newcastle & District AC’s Kerry O’Flaherty clocked in at 28.38 as she crossed over the line in second, while Michelle Finn (Leevale AC) took third place in a time of 28.44.
